Symptoms of PCOS
Infrequent or irregular periods, acne, increased hair growth on the body, a tendency to gain weight and difficulty getting pregnant may be seen. On ultrasound, many small follicles may be seen in the ovaries; however, the diagnosis is made not from ultrasound alone but together with symptoms and tests.
Assessment
Your concerns and menstrual pattern are discussed, an ultrasound is done and the necessary hormone tests are requested. Because other hormone problems such as thyroid and prolactin can cause similar symptoms, differential diagnosis is important.
Treatment approach
Treatment is planned individually according to the main symptom and whether you want children. Lifestyle changes, medicines that regulate the cycle or, if pregnancy is wanted, treatments that support ovulation may be discussed. Regular check-ups are important for long-term follow-up.
The information on this page is for general guidance only; an examination is needed for diagnosis and treatment. Every person’s situation is different.
