When should you seek help?
In general, an assessment is recommended if pregnancy does not happen within a year; if the woman is over 35, this period is shorter. If there is irregular menstruation, a known gynaecological problem or a past pelvic operation, it is appropriate to come earlier.
What happens in the assessment?
In the woman, the womb and ovaries are examined by ultrasound and hormone tests are requested. Whether the tubes are open can be assessed with hysterosalpingography (HSG); HSG is an X-ray examination using contrast dye to show the inside of the womb and the tubes. In the man, a semen analysis is requested. Infertility is a matter in which the couple is considered together.
What is intrauterine insemination (IUI)?
In insemination, sperm that has been prepared to coincide with ovulation is placed into the womb with a thin catheter. It is generally considered for couples whose tubes are open and whose sperm values meet certain criteria. Whether it is suitable for you is discussed according to the results of the assessment; success varies from person to person.
