Which situations need attention?
Periods that come too often or too rarely, no period for several months, bleeding that is much heavier or longer than usual, bleeding between periods or after intercourse, and bleeding after the menopause are all situations that need to be examined.
Possible causes
Stress, weight changes and intense exercise can affect the cycle. Hormonal disorders (such as PCOS and thyroid problems), fibroids, polyps, changes in the womb lining and some medicines can also cause irregularity. The possibility of pregnancy is always kept in mind too.
Assessment and treatment
The womb and ovaries are examined with an examination and ultrasound; hormone tests are requested if needed. Treatment is planned according to the cause: in some cases monitoring is enough, while in others medication or a procedure such as hysteroscopy may come into question.
The information on this page is for general guidance only; an examination is needed for diagnosis and treatment. Every person’s situation is different.
