What happens in a gynaecological examination?
First your concerns, your menstrual pattern and your health history are discussed. Then, if considered necessary, a pelvic examination and ultrasound are done. If you feel uncomfortable during the examination, you can say so; every step is explained beforehand.
Smear test
In a smear test, a sample of cells is taken from the cervix; the procedure takes a few seconds. It is used to screen for cervical cancer. The screening interval is decided according to your age, your previous results and whether an HPV test has been done.
How to prepare
For the examination and smear test, a day outside your period should be chosen. It is recommended to avoid vaginal douching, vaginal medication and sexual intercourse for a day or two before the test. Bringing your previous tests and results with you makes the assessment easier.
The information on this page is for general guidance only; an examination is needed for diagnosis and treatment. Every person’s situation is different.
