Common complaints
Pain during or after intercourse, vaginal dryness, vaginismus (involuntary muscle tightening that prevents intercourse), low desire and bleeding after intercourse are among the reasons people seek help.
Possible causes
Infections, endometriosis, hormonal changes (after birth, while breastfeeding, the menopause), past births or operations and psychological factors can lead to these complaints. Often more than one factor plays a part together.
Approach
The conversation is held with respect for your privacy. First your concern is heard, then, if considered necessary, an examination and tests are planned. Treatment aimed at the cause is recommended; working together with a psychologist or sex therapist can also be discussed when needed.
The information on this page is for general guidance only; an examination is needed for diagnosis and treatment. Every person’s situation is different.
